Al Sikes, standing.

Al Sikes

Al Sikes draws insights from wide-ranging experiences that began in the Midwest and moved east to the power cities of Washington and New York. Sikes’ leadership helped shape the arc of 21st century communication technologies from positions as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and then President of Hearst New Media.

Sikes’ bold leadership at the FCC eliminating barriers that blocked new technologies, led to digital TV, radio and mobile phone services. He also began actions against Howard Stern that resulted in Stern wishing Sikes dead on his daily radio show. Sikes’ technology insights and his collaborations with technology pioneers were captured in his first book, Fast Forward. Beyond his work in business and government, Sikes draws on experiences chairing The Trinity Forum Board, tending a small apiary with his wife, Marty, and leading a growing jazz festival in his hometown of Easton, Maryland.

While living and working in New York City, Sikes founded READ ALLIANCE, which trains teenagers to tutor children with reading deficiencies. In 2004, the Manhattan Institute chose Sikes as one of eight winners of the Social Entrepreneurship Award. This award recognizes enterprising individuals who are helping Americans realize their full potential as citizens and members of society.

Patrick A. Palmieri, Ph.D.

Patrick A. Palmieri, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist, the James and Vanita Oelschlager Chair in Traumatic Stress, and the Director of the Traumatic Stress Center at Summa Health System, Akron, OH. The Center focuses on providing empirically supported interventions for trauma-related problems, trains the current and next generations of health care providers on trauma-informed methods, and conducts research to advance the science of traumatic stress.  Dr. Palmieri has been at Summa Health System since 2004 and holds appointments as Professor of Psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University and Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Kent State University. He received his BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his MA and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He completed a clinical internship at the Danville (IL) VA Medical Center, a postdoctoral fellowship in quantitative psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has been licensed in Ohio since 2006.

Dr. Palmieri's clinical, training, and research interests all revolve around the overarching theme of trauma informed care.  Clinically, he specializes in the evidence-based assessment and cognitive-behavioral treatment of mood, anxiety, and stress-related disorders, especially Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and its commonly co-occurring conditions. He trains students and licensed health care providers on trauma informed best practices, and he provides training and consultation in trauma informed care for health care and other organizations. An active researcher, he has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications. His research has focused on risk and resilience factors of PTSD, the nature and trajectories of post-trauma responding, development of tools assessing PTSD and PTSD risk, evaluation of PTSD treatments, and the role of trauma and PTSD in physical health.  In recent years his interests have expanded to include health care reform and the integration of primary care and behavioral health care, including trauma-informed primary care.  He co-chaired the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Trauma Informed Care Advisory Committee and chairs the Summit County Trauma Informed Care Coalition, whose mission is to increase awareness and understanding within the community about trauma and its effects, to improve quality of care and access to evidence-based services, and to facilitate collaboration and a more coordinated response to trauma issues across systems. He also serves as the Health Care and Education Advisor for Modern Warrior Live, a musical theatrical project with a mission to promote dialogue between veterans and civilians, de-stigmatize PTSD, and promote post-trauma recovery and growth.
