Introducing a new Modern Warrior production created by jazz musician Dominick Farinacci & US military veteran Jaymes Poling

2026 marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks and the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Behind the Lines: a 9/11 Story is a live story, music, and theatre production set against the tragedy of 9/11 and the war that followed. The show features World Trade Center firefighter Bill Spade — the sole survivor of FDNY Rescue Company 5 — and Jaymes Poling, a three-tour Afghanistan combat veteran. Together, they relive their experiences and find a deep connection shaped by service, resilience, and the weight of what they continue to carry.

Directed by Emmett Murphy

The powerful musical score is composed and arranged by internationally acclaimed trumpeter and Modern Warrior creator Dominick Farinacci, who leads a full live ensemble spanning musical genres of original music and reimagining music by Leonard Cohen, Gnarls Barkley, Tom Waits and others through the context of the story.

The music represents the internal voice, deepening the story and revealing the humanity behind the story.

A cinematic world where light, image, and space translate emotion into color, supporting both story and music.

Multimedia, lighting, and staging conceived by director Emmett Murphy create a cinematic environment that supports the storytelling and live music. The lighting design is loosely connected to the concept of synesthesia, feeling and sensing emotions as they relate to color. All of the colors that are used in the show relate to different psychological states of James and Bill over the course of their story.

“One of the most moving, touching experiences regarding war that I’ve felt since returning from Vietnam 46 years ago!”

— Attendee (post via Facebook)

I’ve recently found the courage to stop cutting, but it has been difficult to feel awake in my body and in my mind. Tonight, your show brought me back to life.

— Handwritten letter from a high school student attendee

“Having lost my son to suicide, this performance brought me peace.”

— Attendee (email message following NY performance)

“The show is like nothing else I've ever experienced; it is a genre unto its own. I was so entirely captivated by the interplay of the story with the music that I did not breathe for large sections of this performance.”

— Attendee (post via Facebook)

“Modern Warrior reminds veterans they are not victims and that they can use their experiences to grow and make significant contributions to society.”
